In a radio interview Joseph Boyden said he didn’t think Three Day Road was about war, but that it was about family.  What do you think he meant by this?

The Bird Clan

During his visit to Whitby Joseph Boyden revealed that he unintentionally named each of his main characters after birds: Xavier Bird, Elijah Weesageechak (Whiskeyjack), and Niska which translates to Goose.  He commented that they “all want to fly, but never quite get off the ground.” 

How were these characters unsuccessful in taking flight?
